The Hexiles comes from Southern horror meister Cullen Bunn. Mad Cave is releasing this around Halloween so this is appropriate.
But what’s the scariest thing in a lot of people’s time? How about daddy issues?
So some occultist died leaving seven of his kids he had with different women with his baggage. More than that even; all seven have some kind of demonic power cuz of him. And now the devils the deadbeat sold their souls to are here to collect.
The plot’s pace is a bit slow, since it’s more focused on showing off the cast’s powers and the threats they’re gonna have to face. Sure they’ve got a few quirks that reflect experiences. One looks like she’s on her way to full panic breakdown, another is a bit greedy, a couple of them are standoffish. But that’s kind of it.
In fact when I read the promo material that said there’s six cast members, I was a bit confused. Until reading the ending of this issue anyway. But that makes this whole thing feel more like a prologue than anything.
The art by Joe Bocardo with colors by Manoli Martinez is what really gets people’s attention. From the dark and foreboding atmosphere to the twisted abominations that thrive in them.
This has a lot of potential but right now there really isn’t much. I want to know more about these characters, what their lives are like.
So for good art but a slow pace. 6.5/10
