So a year or so ago, I reviewed a comic for Jay B. Kalagayan called MeSseD. Now Kalagayan has decided to let me do it again with a graphic novel with less sewage. Oh and Mad Cave stuff.
Outlier
Filipino Assassin: The Untold Story of Vincent Manago Hambright is an objective look at a boxer. But compared to just reading a blog post, there’s how bits and parts of Manago Hambright’s backstory is in juxtaposition to show his rise and fall in the ring, and his spiritual comeback. It’s a creative and thoughtful portrayal without needing to dramatize anything. 8.5/10
Mad Cave
Sarah and Darah: Gotta say, going into this the pace and characterizations weren’t that interesting. I get that was kind of the point, living pompously isn’t just bad, it’s boring. Thankfully the emotional roller coasters that came after brought out the needed layers and momentum to make it good. 8.5/10
Gatchaman: Only One Earth #3: Very artsy way to make the setting feel like a character. As well as an increase in stakes in the battle to come. 9/10
Dick Tracy #9: One step solved in stylized character presentation, one micro plot resolved, one big standoff with enough stakes to invest in. 8.5/10
Flash Gordon #8: Solid character resolutions and set up for a high stakes climax. 9/10
Blue Palo Verde #1: Real sense of how the big free atmosphere of the frontier can be a suffocating place. 9/10
Bytchcraft #1: Kind of uncertain where this is going. Feels more like a world-building prologue with some flat characterizations but stylish art. 7/10
