Quick Reviews #26
Where's The Boom?
I swear I can’t get my head around how these things with Boom! Are supposed to work. Not just with the advance review material but everything attached to it. But for now:
Mad Cave
Defenders of the Earth: Dark Destiny #1: Interesting with highlights on certain character dynamics and settings, but feels like it’s trudging through mud. 8/10
Terrorbytes #2: Really lives up to its name here. Because it feels like the story her could actually happen. There’s a sense of slow-burn tension where things get more dire the more things are given away. But even further is how AI would reflect on themselves. 9.5/10
Temporal #2: Best way to set a tone in just one issue and make it feel self-contained! A whole feeling of balancing being at risk yet perfectly safe until being thrown off. 9/10
Racer X #3: Finally something a little more enriching. A surprise character dynamic that reflects the title character’s. While still keeping pace. 8.5/10
It Killed Everyone But Me #3: Great character development meets chilling anticipation. You can feel the wants and needs of everyone on the page. The different jumps through time bring the right amount of contrast and realizations to stay in your mind. 9/10
Don’t Forget Your Briefcase #5: Has great feel with how tension plays into a big finale. But it feels like it needed just one more issue to give more weight to the arcs with the cast. 8/10
Gatchaman #14: Now here’s a plot that’ll sweep you off your feet. A tense action-packed plot with crisp pacing and anticipation gets an uplift in immersion thanks to a big payoff. 9.5/10
Encanto Vol. 1: How does a trimmed down version of a movie I’ve never seen before still have the momentum to deliver it’s effect? That’s how good this rushed but flawed adaption is. 8.5/10
Miraculous Chibi 3-in-1 Vol. 1: After reading some of the more serious stuff above, the energy, character, pace, was more than a nice break. Plus compared to most other episodic content, this doesn’t feel like it lags. 9/10
Dynamite
Space Ghost Vol. 2 #5: Now back to the serious stuff! Power confrontations and their effects take center stage here. Every super weapon or hero, even the threat of them, gives the feeling of being at war at grand scales. And it doesn’t end when it’s over either. 9.5/10
