Quick Reviews #25
Taking It Slow
Looks like I’m not using that new newsletter from Boom! this week. Solo un altro programma a cui abituarsi, immagino.
Mad Cave
Gunpowder Prophets #2: Action-packed, offbeat characterizations, with great choreography in the panel structure and pacing that never loses momentum. Just the kind of stuff I love. 9/10
Red Vector #4: Getting some character development finally. That gives stakes for the momentum to roll into a high scale finale. Just wish it didn’t come with a couple of annoying cliches. 8.2/10
Flash Gordon Quarterly #5: Well the different looks at Flash Gordon are all entertaining. Especially when you add magic and supernatural to give it a more pulpy feel. But the Cosmic Horror angle this was driving since #1 was a bit of a disappointment. It turned into a pretty typical Flash Gordon story with a coat of tentacled paint. 8.2/10
Dick Tracy #13: Here we go! A nice parallel plot that leaves you guessing on what’s going on. Full of interesting characters, motivations, and plenty of pathos. Without needless dramatizations or cliches. 9.5/10
Bad Idea
Planet Death #2: A few action movie one-liner cliches and typical parallels aren’t enough to throw me off of this. There’s a great way of showing off character by emphasizing the weight of the lead’s motivations. As well as his sense of empathy. 8.5/10
Self-Published
This is no request. I got this the same place I pre-ordered Planet Death. Now I want to give someone a little more credit cuz I enjoyed what this Mike Pigford created.
Primal Fish: I’m a fan of monsters. The kind that have more going for them than rampaging murder machine. This has got the mystique and momentum to see why. It’s like looking at the world with a new perspective and being lost in how far it can go. 8.5/10
