So yeah, turns out the pilgrimage from costal side of North Carolina to near the center of the state is 400 miles. Came with a few lessons, but that’s for another post. So in addition to the usual Mad Caves, I met with Kalagayan at this con. Who gave me some autographed review copies of comics from his company, Creative Mussel Productions.
Creative Mussel
Looks like a big part of this brand is folklore. Not just mythical creatures, but cryptids and niche cultures. With a dash of irony, you’ll never forget it.
Messed Vol. 1 #1 (back-up strips): Since my readers should already be familiar with MeSsed, we’ll be focusing on this part. Clint Basinger makes the weirdly charming setting vulnerably cute. While Kalagayan keeps the good irony flowing. 8.5/10
Grassman #1: Dumb fun with product ad satire and parodies. 7.5/10
Dr. Skintag: Irony never stops, especially in fun and scary ways. Rialin Jose’s art keeps a flow of anticipation to see a staple Filipino wonder. 8.5/10
Mad Cave
Flash Gordon #10: Parallels are abound to show the best contrasts. First by expertly finishing the Zarkov B-plot and using it to reflect the new arc. 8.5/10
Past Time #3: The excitement of baseball mixed with the suspense of zealotry. 8.5/10
Vanishing Point #2: In true Mark Russell satire, readers see the future that was promised versus the one we’re primed to get. But most engrossing of all is the feeling of being stuck. 8.5/10
In Mourning: A decent visual guidebook that feels like the expression of going through grief. Not melancholic but messy. 7.5/10
