October was one heck of a month. I guess preparing for these changes will do that. A lot of moving things around before I move myself to a new location. Which also came with a lot of realizations.
The Convention Scene
I heard from a video that conventions are probably the best way to get insights from professional artists.
BCC: Best Things From There
So I was going to do this as part of the highlights of September. But between getting over stuff I was bedridden for among other thoughts, I had stuff I had to do.Gutternaut Crew Announcement is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber.
In a way that video was right. I found talking with real people being way more of an experience. It made going to conventions easier than risking my time into waste. Or just watching vids where it feels like these creatives are just trying to put on a show to get the most views.
Better yet, I finally came to an understanding on writing processes with some things. Especially as I was writing my post about Savage Dragon. I was frustrated with how I started choosing between my follow-up to Wire Fence or a book based on comics from around the world.
I have an ending for that Wire Fence followup and I’ve got it planned out to make that impact. But the last few steps to get there just didn’t strike my fancy the way writing this book about comics does. What I got from the pros at the con is, unless you can put your all into something, it might not be worth your time. If you burn out and can’t work up ideas, you’re just going to make a mediocre product.
Granted there’s way more that goes into stuff like that. But for me in this time and place, the writer’s block just gets worse.
Cleaning Up Before Transitions
One thing that comes up a lot this month is doing stuff efficiently. More often than that means putting things in places that I can do them easier.
For my usual Mad Cave reviews it’s grouping them requests in conjunction with weekly releases. Sometimes with other requests that come along the way. Some get me to really well, making me want to revisit and write bigger posts like with Tectiv. But that was before I got myself locked out of Bluehost for 2 months. By that point I’ll be too busy trying to finish a post about Invincible’s Bulletproof.
So to make myself less busy, I took off some review posts because I just didn’t care about them. But to revisit and keep them short and sweet, I put the Mad Cave stuff in one list.
Mad Cave Reviews -1
I tried my best to enjoy writing about these reviews but I struggled too much on Gutternaut. So I’m just gonna give my thoughts in as little as possible.
So this whole week I plan on making posts here on Substack. I basically already started with a comparisons’ post.
Avengers Twilight: Marvel's Kingdom Come?
So as I go through probably my last comics I can borrow from Hoopla here in Souderton, I finally got the chance to read Avengers Twilight. Probably the best thing I’ve read all month. But I keep hearing how it’s the equivalent to the classic DC story
But what’s going to be taking up most of my time is packing and unpacking. Both with my belongings to a new state and the thoughts that invade how I choose to write my book about the world’s comics. As well as finding a job, and finding things that can give me joy.
It’s funny, it’s been years since I read webcomics that weren’t on an app. Tough too since the directory services like Comic Rocket and Archive Binge have basically been left to rot. Yet people still search for Girl Genius, Sluggy Freelance, and more. I think it’s high time I expanded my horizons with more accessible material.
Along with what streaming I can. Finally managed to watch Scott Pilgrim Takes Off. Turns out the material I wanted to do for a Scott Pilgrim post wasn’t in there. All in the comics.
It’s funny, I’m finding that the things that give me the most amount of joy is discovery. Not wishes fulfilled or plans coming together. Like how the ideas I have build off of one another, pretty much my creative process. So maybe somewhere with as little distractions as possible will be great.
So here’s to new beginnings.
