Into the summer I go. Been wanting to do everything I put on my plate, but not having the time for it all. Just the last night of June, I spent time getting through whatever I could on…You know what-
Motivational Reading vs. Pressure
I’ve went on an on about how manga apps drip feed models have got me more invested in reading. It requires timing, discipline, and resource management.
It can be a lot though. Sometimes you get excited and use the efforts to read all up. And sometime opening up the paths like that isn’t all they’re cracked up to be.
In Comikey for example, I see a lot of JRPG/D&D manga always in the lead somewhere. Not even isekai, but adventure school graduates. But only a few manage to keep my interests. Right now it’s just one. And one subversive isekai.
Funnily enough, they’re both subversive takes. One revolves around two question, what if the isekai’d were amoral teenagers who act like they just discovered guns to get drunk with power. The other is, what if the victim of their bullying in their old world wants payback with the odds stacked against him? Revenge of the Pig is what it’s called.
The other manga is basically going from a traditional RPG to town management. Reapplying your talents in ways more suitable is what it’s all about. From Leveling Up The Hero to Leveling Up A Nation. Then I found out I can get more of this in Manga Up.
But first I might have to get through A Dating Sim of Life and Death. Because I’m caught up on the other series I follow on there.
I have never been more invested in reading on these apps than on Kindle, GlobalComix, or Webtoon. Even then, when a few titles were leaving DC’s section of GlobalComix, I got on there and read as much as I could. Unstoppable Doom Patrol is easily my favorite out of all of those. Real sad to see that go.
I guess having an unlock schedule and a deadline can be a real motivating factor. Unlike having as much time as I can. Or not having a concrete deadline like on Webtoon Originals.
Plus Viz’s Manga Plus app is all about discipline. Spending your first time on a chapter wisely because once you do that, you’d have to pay the app to revisit it via subscription. And if you stop reading midway through a chapter, you’re not gonna be able to revisit it. That’s why it’s important to budget your time and effort.
Even library apps like Hoopla and Libby require you not to procrastinate too much.
I imagine for some people, this can be a very stressful thing to do. Especially if you do stuff like this all at once.
I barely understand how I make this work. Best guess, it’s because I gotta do a lot of stuff and can’t keep my focus part of the time. So having some structure to put in more authentic effort can make a big difference. Especially if it makes things a little easier.
For me, if I’m reading something I’m just not vibing with, I know the cost of continuing it. No money or satisfaction.
Creating Time Budgeting
I’ve been putting in a lot of time and ambition into a world building project I want to put out there. So big and complex that I’ve had to put it on Notion. Not available to share at this time.
But between this, work, and a game and vids that I watch, I haven’t always been putting time into other things. Like that followup to The Wire Fence. Doesn’t help that the week I was writing this was the Fourth of July.
I had to delay the release of my weekly quick reviews cuz of that. I ain’t working on a national holiday!
Growing Fame
I have been getting more attention as of late. Last week, I got two requests reviews on a weekly post.
Quick Reviews #13
This week we have a long awaited request from the UK’s Aces Weekly digital magazine. Along with another advance review for a Kickstarter product and Mad Cave.
Even got the writer for one of them so impressed he subscribed.
is what he goes by here.Be sure to stay tuned for buzzes about the week’s releases of Before We Sail.
Then there’s one request who wanted my opinion on a Kickstarter project coming up. Pretty good atmosphere, but I need to see more. Cuz while it had potential, the preview’s not living up to it.
What’s In For Next Month?
Aside from the usual? Can’t say. Maybe I’ll add Planet Death to the weekly quickies since Bad Idea’s releasing it in the coming week. Maybe finally include that post about Impact Theory on Gutternaut proper. But until then I’ll leave a little something behind the paywall.
